Just for Today

I was reminded recently that as we are all planning our 2018 and all that we want to accomplish, sometimes we lose sight of the current moment.  So lost in thought, we don’t even hear the phone ring or someone calling our name.  Have you been that engrossed before in something you are doing?

We can do this in so many ways.  I think just about all of us have been thinking on something and low and behold we have driven to our destination without even realizing it.   Did you enjoy the path along the way?  The flowers you just passed or the wonderful snow coming down? What about that new restaurant going up? I bet you didn’t notice any of these things. We are so engrossed in your thoughts. Be it the future or the past, we just lost part of today and will never get it back.

Here is what some of the great thinkers have said about this topic…

“Life is available only in the present moment.  If you abandon the present moment you cannot live the moments of your daily life deeply.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

“Stop acting as if life is a rehearsal.  Live this day as if it were your last.  The past is over and gone.  The future is not guaranteed.” – Wayne Dyer

“Past and future are in the mind only – I am now.” – Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Now I’m not saying thinking of the future is bad in fact, it actually creates our tomorrows.  What I’m saying is anytime we get so set in our mind that we don’t see what is going on around us, we stop interacting in life and being part of it fully is when we slip.  Anytime we forget today and fulling living in it, is a great loss.  We will never get back seeing a child smile or an interaction with someone we love.

As the great thinkers mentioned, live deeply today, live today as if it was your last, tomorrow will come but, for today, live it fully.

It is my hopes this will encourage each of you Just for Today to live more fully and to enjoy the freedom of living more fully in the year ahead.
